If you’re looking for an intuitive and relaxing instrument, you’ve probably heard of the handpan and the tongue drum. Two instruments with soothing sounds, perfect for beginners… But which one to choose? In all honesty, I’ll tell you right away: I prefer the handpan ! I explain why and guide you to make your choice. 😉
1. The handpan: a rich and vibrant instrument
The handpan is distinguished by its rich harmonics and deep vibrations. Each note resonates for a long time and offers a varied sound palette. What I love about the handpan is that it allows immense freedom of expression. Even with little technique, you quickly create captivating melodies. By the way, if you want to know how to choose your first handpan, I advise you to read my guide Which handpan to choose to start?. 😊
2. Tongue drum: simple but more limited
The tongue drum, also called tank drum, is simpler in its design. Its slats (or “tongues”) are cut into the metal, producing a soft, melodious sound. It’s a great choice to start with if you’re looking for something very accessible. But, in my opinion, it lacks a bit of depth and subtlety compared to the handpan.

3. Ease of learning: advantage of the handpan
Both instruments are easy to handle, but the handpan has the advantage of offering more variety in the playing. You can play with your fingers, palms, and even explore more complex rhythms as you progress. It’s an instrument that evolves with you, and that’s exactly what I like!
4. Versatility and emotion: the handpan wins
The handpan is perfect for meditation, yoga, but also for more creative performances. It allows you to travel musically and express your emotions in an intense way. For me, it’s an incomparable musical companion.
PS: As proof, in your opinion, which of the two instruments is more famous? 🙂

5. The characteristics of the handpan and the tongue drum
The handpan is a larger instrument, often made of nitrided steel, with a convex shape and several notes arranged around a central dome (ding). It is played with only the hands, allowing for a wide range of dynamics, nuances, and sound effects. Its resonance is deep and enveloping, ideal for meditation and improvisation.
The tongue drum, on the other hand, is more compact and light, often made of stainless steel, with “tongues” cut into its surface. It can be played with the hands or with sticks, resulting in a clearer, more percussive sound. However, its range is often more limited, with fewer notes, and its tones are simpler and more repetitive compared to those of a handpan.
My personal opinion
Of course, the tongue drum is a nice instrument, but if I had to advise you, I would say: choose the handpan ! It gives you more possibilities, richer sound, and a truly immersive experience. And if you want to make the right choice, don’t hesitate to consult my guide to choosing the right handpan.
